Project Background

Branchline (now Atlas) kit for Railbox. Did some heavy weathering, based on a YouTuber name Dan (more below).

Painting & Weathering

I started with a built Branchline Berwick Railbox car, purchased on eBay. I did a little weathering to the roof, just to get it out of the way. My first step was airbrushing a light dilute coat to provide an initial fade. You can see how the lettering is not as distinctly black as a new kit car.

Seal with Dullcoat, and move on to next steps.

The car got an overall wash of black/brown acrylic paint. Was pretty wet, so it gathered by the ribs. After after sealing, the graffiti tags were applied by hand. I also used an xacto knife to scuff/scratch the logo and lettering, just a bit.

Sealed again with another Dullcoat application.

Next came another wash, this time to fade the graffiti a bit and provide the middle of the panels a little bit of contrast. Then came the rust pitting, which was done with oils (Vandyke brown, raw umber).

I not only worked the sides, but also the door tracks as well.

Accented the trucks a bit, added just a bit of rust halo to a few pits and scrapes (including rust bleed) with Burnt Umber (gives a little bit of a reddish hue). Sealed, and called it quits.

Summary

Super pleased with the result- best I've felt about a project in a long time.

Resources

HUGE shout out goes to Dan Arnold, who I don't know but I've consumed a lot of his work on YouTube. I've gotten a lot of energy by watching his projects and his Railbox tutorial was the inspiration for this car.
